“Because that was the problem with society. It cared too much about who you fell in love with but never about why. The why matters.”
YES! Defy went right to my feels. I never wanted it to end to be honest! The story is about Melody and Jamie – we met Jamie in Vicious as part of the gang and in the book it was casually implied that he had a relationship with his teacher, Melody.
Melody is a ballerina who got injured so now she’s teaching the rebellious teens at All Saints High and the four Hotlholes, who all treat her poorly due to her poor status.
Jamie is the principle’s son who had his eye on his teacher for a while and a car accident, barely a bump, brings them together. The two don’t deny their mutual attraction which I imagine was due to page shortage but I liked that Melody embraced it and Jamie didn’t really give a shit about anyone finding out. The remains an affair but of course more people around them find out eventually.
“I think I like you,” I muttered, pressing my face to his muscled torso in a hug. I felt his heartbeat under my ear.
“I think I like you back.”
The story developes in between the gaps in Vicious so you have to read that one first in order to understand what is happening in the general picture of the series.
Defy was more than a teacher-student romance, Jamie and Melody are explosive together and the story despite it being less than 100 pages was enough to hook me in and make me love these two. I could read an entire series about them, honestly; Shen’s writing keeps getting better and I enjoyed these two characters more than the previous. Read Vicious and then dive into Melody and Jamie!
