I don’t even know how to review this book. It’s a classic case of it’s not you, it’s me. So far I’ve loved all of the author’s previous books. A couple of years ago I read RAW and it was the most amazing book ever. It was brutal, and beautiful. Dirty did not fall into the same category. It was a nice book to get us back into Twitch and make us miss him even more but as far as book characters go, Julius was the only interesting (new) character this book had to offer. For those of you who don’t remember, Julius is a close friend of Twitch so you can guess what his life is like.
The major problem I had with this one was the million POVs. There’s Julius, Alejandra, Ling – remember her? – Twitch. And to be honest with you, after a book so twisted like RAW and an ending like that, that had readers waiting for a sequel for years, this book pissed me off more than it satisfied my craving for me. Simply put, I didn’t care about Ling so her POV seemed unnecessary, I didn’t care about Alejandra and Julius was fantastic but he’s story kept getting interrupted by Ling and Twitch and when the story goes back and forth between Twitch trying to get his life back and Julius trying to murder/play house with Alejandra, guess who wins. If this book had been better balanced between POV and time jumps, I would have liked it more but just as you get into a story, it switches to another person, and them back again. Their lives could not be any more different at the time so going back and forth didn’t help getting into the mood.
Alejandra is married to Dino. Dino is a piece of work, and while on the outside their marriage looks happy, it’s anything but. So when Dino gets killed, Alejandra lies, runs away from her family and tries to leave it all behind. Julius was called to bring justice and find out who killed Dino – mafia people and all. I don’t want to give away too much but long story short, he has to kill Alejandra. As a character she was all over the place, too whiny at times, strong at times, too childish often and then there was this little piece half way into the story that I just can’t…
Julius smiles then, bright and blinding, folding the small woman into his arms and rocking her back and forth. The woman grips the back of his cool wool sweater tightly and makes a content humming noise in her throat as Julius cradles her to him, and I decide to hate her. They pull away from each other, smiling like a couple of fools, and the woman looks kindly to me before turning back to Julius. “You gonna introduce me to your friend, Jay?”
Can you tell I’m pissed? CAN YOU? CAUSE I AM!
Sweetheart? Oh, now I’m fuming. The sad part is that I don’t even know why.
MAKE. THIS. CRINGE. WORTHY. SCENE. STOP.
“Don’t you ‘sweetheart’ me, brother mine.”
Wait a second now.
My head snaps up.
Jesus Christ, I’m an asshole.
Okay, so maybe I was a little hasty in my judgement.
NAH YOU WERE NOT WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT????
If I had a dollar for every time I read a similar scene in a book I’d have more money than Bill fucking Gates. ENOUGH WITH THIS SHIT, AUTHORS. This is a woman who was married to an asshole and who was raped by her brother in law, right next to her husband, over and over and over and over again. Getting jealous over a brotherly hug that is described in way too much detail over a guy who wants to kill her and she just met the other day IS. NOT. NORMAL.
After that, I just skipped the rest because I lost all interest in her, and Julius and his family. I just wanted more Twitch and I got only a glimpse of him. Bring me the next one and I’ll pretend this never happened.
