Labeled a ‘Cursed’ woman of Eve from birth, Maddie has endured nothing but pain and repression at the hands of The Order’s most abusive elder, Moses. Now living with her sister in The Hangmen’s secluded compound, finally, Maddie, is free, protected by the Hangmen’s most volatile member; the heavily pierced and tattooed, Flame. The Hangmen’s most infamous member, Flame, is ruled by one thing—anger.

Flame’s mission in life is to protect Maddie, to keep her safe. Until a trigger from his troubled past sends him spiraling into madness, trapping him in the deepest recesses of his disturbed mind.

5 on fire stars!

“We are Flame and Maddie. And we have survived.”

Oh my world, this book! First of all let me talk about that amazing experience of having a long anticipated book waiting for you and you have to take a moment and appreciate it; the fact that it’s finally here and in a few hours (that’s all if took) you’ll be done with it and you need to prepare for all the feels. ALL. THE FEELS.

From the first book we knew that Flame was for lack of a better word a complete and utter psycho. But the why and how of his story shocked me so much, I did not see this coming. He’s different but oh so amazing. So much ugly crying from the beginning. Flame is the MC’s killer, plain and simple. They all will kill if it comes to that and it does come to that a lot but Flame, he’s the one that will not just offer to do it but enjoy every moment of it too. And he is not merciful.

“So that’ll be a yes. A huge fucking yes to the extreme makeover, Krueger edition.”

You name the worst possible death, Flame has delivered it. Probably multiple times.

  • Does that make him an anti-hero? Probably.
  • Did I still love him and wanted to hug him pretty much throughout the book? Totally!

His past -which I will not spoil but it was not easy to read – made me pause and take a deep breath because a) I couldn’t read through the tears and b) it was too much, far too painful to read. I still loved every moment of that experience, and it made me love this character more than I ever did before.

“I know I’m different. I know I don’t see the world like everyone else does. But I want to see your world, Maddie. Even if it’s the only one I’ll ever understand.”

Flame & Maddie ♥

Ever since I read Souls Unfractured I’ve had Dust to Dust by The Civil Wars on repeat in my head and I almost never associate books and music together but this one is like a perfect little soundtrack for these two flawed people that finally found each other.

Let me in the wall
You’ve built around
We can light a match
And burn it down
Let me hold your hand
And dance ’round and ’round the flames
In front of us
Dust to dust

Maddie’s story was pretty much told with the previous books, like Mae and Lilah, she too suffered at the awful cult the girls were trapped in. The Order is the same fucked up cult as ever, we get a glimpse of it again and now with Rider being in charge we see things in a sort of different light, still fucked up, if not in more detailed way.

After Maddie finds out that Flame was the one that killed the psychos that held her, she does what no one else would ever dare; she hugs him. And the psychotic brother doesn’t flinch. Or kill her. Mostly because he is too busy trying to understand how on earth would someone do that, to him of all people. And then it’s over.

Souls Unfractured picks up right where Heart Recaptured ended; Flame is out of the hospital, determined to get Maddie out of that church. Their story doesn’t progress fast, it takes its time and it’s beautifully done – no doubt there, Tillie’s writing is once again captivating! The religious aspect of the story was there and that’s all I’m going to say about it.

“What are words?
Sometimes the flick of a pair of eyes or the flush of skin reveals everything you need to know.
Words can wound.
Silence can heal.”

Flame doesn’t touch people, Maddie doesn’t like to be touched. The way they slowly approached each other was so beautiful, if not heartbreaking, how they helped one another fight back against all the pain in their mind and the past.

This is not a fun read, or even a light one, but you must know that if you want to read it, it will hurt and you will cry, it’s gritty and raw and painful. But it’s the emotions and how these two characters come out of it that makes it so unique to read and unforgettable in its own way. Another amazing book in the series, Flame lovers, enjoy and grab a box of tissues.

about the author

Tillie Cole is a Northern girl through and through. She originates from a place called Teesside on that little but awesomely sunny (okay I exaggerate) Isle called Great Britain. She was brought up surrounded by her English rose mother — a farmer’s daughter, her crazy Scottish father, a savagely sarcastic sister and a multitude of rescue animals and horses.
